Happy Valentine’s Day from the 4th and 5th graders at RJ Richey and the Fine Arts Studio! We were inspired by the work of Peter Max. Using brushes and paint on printing plates, we created heart prints that play with color. Enjoy!

We say “NO!” to Drugs!
Monday, October 26th, 2009From October 26th to the 30th, we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week at RJ Richey. We strive to make good choices for ourselves and share our wisdom with those at Burnet Elementary and at Shady Grove Elementary by creating banners filled with paper balloons. These balloons carry the message “Say No to Drugs!” to our younger peers, while also being colorful! It’s an important message to share with everyone!
Our Veteran’s Day Celebration–Preparation
Monday, October 19th, 2009Each year, our district celebrates those who have served in our armed forces by inviting them to our district-wide event. This year it will take place on Wednesday, November 11th, Veteran’s Day across the nation.
The 4th and 5th graders are learning a beautiful piece titled We Remember, written by John Jacobson and Mac Huff.
The lyrics are available on the Fine Arts Studio webpages in the Music section:

Fantastic Fall Colors
Thursday, October 15th, 2009Both 4th and 5th graders are working from a still-life composition of two wonderful Cinderella pumpkins, some baskets, and ivy. They are concentrating on several concepts at once: a focus on color, understanding how colors relate, and how they can best communicate what they see; a focus on form, understanding how line and value can give form to a shape;
and finally, how their work communicates what they see, and how they see it. It reinforces their voice in their own work, and demonstrates their ability to persevere when it is hard (and it is hard to draw).
Art and Science with Journey North
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009
Students in Science Club integrate Art and Science with their butterflies that they create the first day. These mini works of art are now on their way to Mexico by way of Minnesota with Journey North, a very special organization that serves to bring attention to the migration of monarchs as well as other species. It coincided with our discussion of the Bulldog Butterfly Garden located behind RJR, with its own rainwater cistern.

What is Peace?
Monday, September 14th, 2009After a full week with 4th and 5th graders brainstorming about Peace, we created an amazing word list which I posted onto Wordle. Take a look!

All the words serve as inspiration for our Pinwheels for Peace 2009 project.
Inspired by Peace
Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009Where there is peace, there is culture; where there is culture, there is peace. ~Nicholas Roerich
Positive creativeness is the fundamental quality of the human spirit. Let us welcome all those who, surmounting personal difficulties, propel their spirits to the task of peaceBuilding, thus ensuring a radiant future. ~Nicholas Roerich
It has been a great and powerful week so far in the Fine Arts Studio, as we are focusing on the words about Peace for our Pinwheels for Peace project. What does Peace look like? What does it feel like? How do people treat each other in Peace? Finally, how do we create Peace?
